Carpet Cleaning in London

The home-cleaning experts at Hoover recommend weekly or more frequent vacuuming with a Hoover upright with an allergen-filtration system. For many people, spring is considered the high season for allergies. But for some homeowners who dont routinely and thoroughly clean their carpets, the sniffling and sneezing associated with allergies may persist yearround. Deep cleaning, a job once handled mainly by professional carpet cleaners, can be done quickly and effectively by consumers with a Steamvac deep cleaner. The cleaner distributes a solution of hot tap water and special detergent into the carpet, agitates the fibers with its exclusive, five rotating-brush system and then extracts the solution containing dirt. The five-brush agitation system and carpet detergent helps release the dirt and allergens from the carpet fibers for removal by the Steamvac deep cleaner.
Carpet Cleaning Service Carpet Chem Corporation began as a familyowned and operated business venture. The owners identified a need for a quality carpet and upholstery cleaning system, and their son developed the formula for success. Today, the business has been franchised 21 times in 16 different states. Carpet Chem Corporation attributes its steady growth and financial achievements to a quality product line, through market research and an effective price strategy.

New York Podiatrist

The program was started a few years ago. Safeco was interested in getting into the medical malpractice market and saw podiatry as a good market. As Doman explains, “Podiatrists have been treated by many malpractice carriers as outside the traditional medical professions. Yet they have an equivalent type of education. They get a DPM (Doctor of Podiatric Medicine) after college and are board certified.” Safeco was approached by an agent who had a program, so they put together a product. Doman goes on to point out that the Podiatrists Program has extremely broad coverage, including: Protection for the DPMs professional corporation or partnership, employees and locum tenens (substitute physician) while serving on the DPMs behalf.
Do you remember where we were 10 years ago? Clipping and chipping in long white coats and still called chiropodists or shiropodists by most. Doing lengthy, complicated neurovascular assessments or nifty scalpel work to impress our medical colleagues and using adhesive semi-compressed felt pads around foot ulcers and trying to wean ourselves from splashing on Friars Balsam, hydrogen peroxide or inadine ointment on every sweaty foot or open wound! Those were the days! Over the last 10 years, the podiatrist has evolved into a key member of the diabetes multidisciplinary team. No single podiatrist or other member of the healthcare team in the UK can deliver effective care for any people with diabetes in isolation from their multidisciplinary team. The medical and nursing champions of such teams have been and remain our greatest allies. There are now a number of centres of excellence across the UK where dedicated and established multidisciplinary clinics exist. The emergence of multidisciplinary foot teams was evident ten years ago–Kings College Hospital and Manchester Royal Infirmary were putting on regular foot conferences and The Diabetic Foot Journal was starting up as the enthusiastic new kid on the block. The dissemination of ideas and inspiration from the established pioneers mentioned above was resulting in the emergence of more NHS podiatrists and podiatry posts being linked to diabetes. The team in Salford published their experience of setting up an integrated approach, directly linking their hospital team to specialist clinicians based in that strange and scary place–the community setting. Diabetes-specialist podiatrist posts were being advertised every month in our professional journals.

CIRCLE READER SERVICE CARD #61
The basic premise of person of the therapist training is that therapy is a personal encounter within a professional frame. Although theory and technique are essential to the professional practice of therapy, the process is effected wholly through the relationship between therapist and client. This means that to fathom the therapy relationship, one must understand its components, both personal and professional. The professional aspects of the relationship define the roles of the participants vis-a-vis one another. The personal component of the therapy relationship viscerally relates the therapist to the clients life.Therapy challenges clinicians to use their personal selves effectively within the professional relationship. The personal component of this relationship is not about some generic liking and acceptance of clients. It is specific to the goals and means of therapy. Thus therapists need training that both opens them to themselves and teaches them vulnerability, discipline, and freedom within the relationship. One approach, the person/practice model (Aponte Winter, 1987) attempts to integrate intensely personal work on the self with clinical practice. It illustrates well some of the dilemmas over boundaries that confront trainers and trainees who pursue this personal focus in professional training.
THIS MONTH IM NOT writing for you, but to you. I get many letters from aspiring and perspiring personal trainers with myriad questions ranging from how to raise the bar–pun intended–to how to raise their rates. They want to know how to start, how to stay and how to grow as a business. Ill try to hit some of the recurring themes this month. * Job vs. career. Theres no correct answer here; just dont be one and say youre the other. Many people elect to become trainers as a way to supplement their income but have no desire to break new ground in health or fitness. Others make it their lifes work and will stop at nothing to see it through. To flirt with the field and portray yourself as a lifer to raise your rates is not cool. * Commit to the hours. Look, garbage men work early in the morning and bartenders work late at night. Trainers usually work when others dont, like many service-industry people. This is something you should know before entering the profession. If thats not okay with you, youll be the trainer who gripes to all his clients about being tired and the hours he keeps. Would you want to train with that guy?

Budget cuts are seriously threatening the dental health of adults and children with special needs, says a report published today. Dentists called on the Government to restore funding for the “safety-net” service that is meant to help people unable to use a normal general dental practitioner. A survey of hospital-based community dentists found more than half those questioned said their budget had been cut since 1994. The BDA survey showed one in five community dentists believed cuts were affecting the dental care of those with mental health problems. One in four thought the dental care of patients with learning difficulties was being compromised and more than a third said their trust had closed community health surgeries.
I am an anesthesiologist and the parent of a 17-year-old with severe developmental delays. My son requires general anesthesia for dental work and other examinations. First of all, you need to find a dentist who is experienced in working with patients under anesthesia. You can call your local childrens hospital, ask for the anesthesiologist on call and ask which dentists frequently bring patients into the operating room for dental work. There are many things you can do to help the procedure go more easily. Ask your physician for EMLA cream. This is a local anesthetic cream that can be applied to numb the skin so that he will not feel the IV needle. It needs to be applied two hours before starting the IV. You can ask to stay with him until he is asleep and be called to be with him before he wakes up, if this would help him remain calm. You will need to find out whether he will need to be completely asleep or just sedated (there are pros and cons to both), depending on what needs to be done and what you anticipate his reaction will be. If he does need to be completely asleep, ask for something to prevent vomiting. Anesthesia is extremely safe these days, but because of the special needs issues you have to be a little more demanding than the average parent usually is. There are several options to control the movements of your son so that his dental care can be completed. One such option is to admit your son to a surgical center for outpatient general anesthesia. In many large cities there are anesthesiologists who have office-based practices and will come to the dentists office to administer the anesthesia. If your son will not allow his dentist even to clean his teeth, then starting an IV line will be a challenge. An anesthesiologist can sedate your son in such a way so that an IV line can be started safely and without injuring your son. Office based anesthesia administered by someone other than the doctor performing the dental procedure is both cost effective and far safer than any other method.

PHOENIX — Plenty of mystique surrounds the phrase “pitchers and catchers report.” But on a team like the Oakland Athletics, where there arent any superstars making grand entrances or players denying what Jose Canseco wrote about them in his book, the day is mostly about shoes. Showing off new shoes. Trying on new shoes. Complaining the wrong shoes arrived. So it went on an overcast Saturday morning with light rain for the As at their Papago Park facility, where just as many position players have already arrived as pitchers and catchers.

Being Bullied

For example, bullies attribute hostile intentions to people around them and therefore perceive provocation where it does not exist. “What are you staring at?” is a common opening line of bullies. For the bully, these perceived slights serve as justification for aggressive behavior.

In general, children who become the targets of bullies have a negative view of violence and go out of their way to avoid conflict. They tend to be “loners” who exhibit signs of vulnerability before being singled out by a bully. Being victimized leads these children-who are already lacking in self-esteem-to feel more anxious and thereby increase their vulnerability to further victimization. Being the target of a bully leads to social isolation and rejection by peers, and victims tend to internalize others negative views, further eroding their self-esteem. Although bullying actually lessens during adolescence, that is the period when peer rejection is most painful for victims. In a number of well-publicized cases (in Scandinavia, Japan, and Australia, as well as the United States), adolescents tormented by bullies have been driven to suicide.

Evidence indicates that bullying is not a phase a child will outgrow. In a long-term study of more than 500 children, University of Michigan researchers discovered that children who were viewed as the most aggressive by their peers at age eight grew up to commit more (and more serious) crimes as adults. Other studies indicate that, as adults, bullies are far more likely to abuse their spouses and children.

Introduction Through the first years of the century securitization was extremely popular among mortgage lenders, not only in Russia but all over the world. In developed countries numerous well-established financial institutions gradually started to substitute other methods of finance by the securitization method. The share of the mortgages financed by issuance of securities has grown in many banks in developed countries. For example in the notorious Northern Rock, the share of mortgages financed by issuing securities was close to 50%. One of the specifics of Russia was that in that country rather a big number of banks used securitization as the only method of housing finance. So nearly 100% of their mortgage portfolios were financed by securitization. Even among the top 10 Russian mortgage lenders, there were banks that relied exclusively on securitization (for example Moskommertsbank or City Mortgage Bank).
Carlton Advisory Services Chairman Howard L. Michaels announced that Carlton has arranged $14.5 million of first mortgage financing on behalf of one of its clients for the Standard Oil Building, a 9-story office building located in downtown Los Angeles, CA. This financing was placed with a major German financial institution. Carlton executives Howard L. Michaels, Michael Campbell, and Daniel Drew arranged the attractive first mortgage on behalf of their client.

Bluetooth Cell Docking

A new study funded by Motorola Corp. suggests that cell phones do not pose a cancer disk, reports Promotive Communications Inc. However, experts say its too soon to rule out a negative health impact of cell phones. A 13-nation study on the relationship between cell phones and brain tumors is under way. The results are expected to be released in 2004.
For as little as $100, anyone can buy your cell phone records online. Law enforcement authorities said various illegal methods are used to collect the information. The methods include “pretexting,” where someone calls a wireless carrier and pretends to be a customer, hacking into an online account or even bribing cellular employees to get access to records. It isnt a new practice, but it is an alarming one. Authorities say online data brokers have been selling Canadian and U.S. phone records for at least three years and havent been hiding the fact. Privacy groups estimate there are more than 40 websites like Locatecell, most of which are based in the United States.

Two-thirds of the 7-mile-long Hermit Road, west of Grand Canyon Village, is now closed to traffic, buses and pedestrians for major reconstruction. That closure, from Hopi Point westward, will continue through November 2008, and starting on July 7, the entire Hermit Road will be closed for construction. This $17 million reconstruction project will widen the road, improve the viewpoints and better define the walking trail. “People will be inconvenienced,” said Maureen Oltrogge, Grand Canyon spokeswoman.
OREM — Portions of Geneva Road and 800 North will be closed Monday through May 29 for construction, Utahs Department of Transportation announced Friday. Geneva Road will be restricted to one lane from 400 North to 1600 North in Orem while the road is being paved. The restriction will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday-Friday and on May 29. On-street parking will also be restricted during this time and motorists should expect moderate travel delays, UDOT advises.
First, snow is removed from the existing area far enough for two days of work. Then, dozers are used to rip up the frozen ground in small increments. Workers are careful not to rip open too much earth in case snow falls overnight and fills the holes with frost and moisture. The dozers then push fill material into the existing road and push frozen and dry material onto the road. The sheeps foot roller is then used to roll over the material to break up the frozen chunks of dirt and mix the dry and frozen material together. After a base course (the subbase layer of an asphalt roadway) is compacted, the grader is rolled over it to ensure that the road is even. The smooth-wheel roller is used to compact the top 4 to 6 inches of road. The next day, the top 2 inches of the road are final-graded, and 3 inches of well-graded #5 gravel are spread, graded, and compacted once more. While this is being done, other Soldiers grade and compact the ditches along the side and complete the finish work. This process may sound easy, but when the top 12 inches of road are frozen, it is not a simple task. The road that Task Force Eagle is working on is important to the local population for many reasons. First of all, it connects towns (over a 100-kilometer stretch) that were previously isolated from one another. This has significant economic impacts because these towns can now trade and export among each other. The road allows the small village governments to communicate and become a stronger government. The road also impacts education and health care because it is now easier to get to school or see a doctor when needed. But most importantly, Afghan local nationals are helping with the project by providing gravel, fuel, and water used in construction, which creates jobs for the local populace. In turn, the Afghan workers learn how to care and maintain the roads themselves, helping to make them autonomous once coalition forces leave the country.

Theres no place like home, Dorothy said. Anywhere I hang my hat is home, goes the old Johnny Mercer standard. Both are true and both are different. Home is one particular place, not like any other, and home is a feeling that can be created many times in many places. But before the utopian future arrives when all design recognizes these realities, were here trying to make a home. MS is very likely to change a familys requirements–starting with the urgent need to save energy for the good stuff. At the same time, finances may be pinched and options limited. Still, the questions are nearly universal. Can your home be safer? Can cleaning it be easier? Do adaptations have to look medical or threaten to devalue property? Do they have to cost the earth? The National MS Society would like to be your ally as you work out your own answers to these questions. We have some helpful publications–in print and on the Web site. We also think there is much to be gained from sharing information with each other. And wed like to remind everyone that occupational therapists (OTs) are the specialists who know the most about practical changes at home or work to meet needs imposed by MS. The surveys were completed by more than 85 parents of children with disabilities (ages six through 18), in 20 states, who take part in sports or recreation. The author of the survey and manager of Gillettes rehabilitation services, Judy Miller, comments, We encourage our patient to get involved in recreational activities. Sports are not for everyone, but it can be a great way for many kids with disabilities to stay physically healthy and to feel good about themselves. We believe the survey results will help us do a better job of getting our patients involved in recreation if they want to.More than half of the parents who answered the survey said physical fitness was one of the most important benefits of sports participation for their child. Self-esteem and building friendships ranked close behind. Nancy Harder of Cambridge, Minnesota, says the overall benefits for her two sons have been tremendous. Being involved in wheelchair racing has kept the boys healthy and has helped them to be more self-sufficient. Both boys were born with spina bifida. Ben, now 17, took part in his first road race at the age of four, using a hand-peddled bicycle. Later, he switched to a standard wheelchair, until the people in his home town raised money to buy Ben a specialized racing chair. Today, he competes in road races and track meets on the national and international levels. His 13-year-old brother, Nick, is also busy developing his own racing talents.

This is a unique and valuable resource that programs and individuals should have readily available in their libraries.
Sports and recreation for the disabled: A resource manual. Five major sport organizations currently providing athletic and recreational opportunities to people with disabilities are featured. Within this framework a cross-disability or categorical approach emphasizes activities rather than disabilities for sport and recreational opportunities involving persons with handicapping conditions. At prenatal classes, expert nurses inform you of what to expect. Each stage of labour, along with the emotions involved, is outlined. The labour at the beginning of life. Sure as taxes, the pain will come. Life is proceeding as it should. There is a beginning and a progression. Just around the stage called transition is the hardest part, the pressure, the wish to stop or the choice to push forward. They may tell you not to push. You may hold back, against gravity, and against Mother Nature. Resisting. We have an opportunity to start in pre-dialysis clinics. We teach. We support. We try to maximize understanding and optimize good health. End stage renal failure will come. Planning for this phase can be as natural as planning any life event. Then there is the labour of beginning treatment. A patient and family undergo major shifts in lifestyle. Crises come and, hopefully, dissipate.

sydney eyelid surgery

Abstract: Eyelid anomalies caused by congenital or acquired etiologies occur in birds. A cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) was presented for evaluation of fused eyelids on the right side and a narrowed palpebral fissure on the left side after a burn accident. The right eyelids were reconstructed, and the left palpebral fissure was lengthened by using microsurgical techniques. The cockatiel regained a normal appearance after surgery, and corneal disease was prevented. Key words: ocular trauma, ankyloblepharon, microsurgery, eyelids, psittacine birds, avian, cockatiel, Nymphicus hollandicus A 1-year-old male cinnamon pearl cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) was presented for evaluation of apparent fusion of the upper and lower right eyelids and narrowing of the palpebral fissure of the left eye. The history revealed that the bird had suffered facial and leg burns 3 months previously after landing on the edge of a steaming pot. The leg injuries healed without permanent damage but the palpebral fissure of the right eye started to close soon after the burn accident. Medical therapy prescribed by the referring veterinarian included topical ophthalmic triple antibiotic solution to both eyes 3 times daily and systemic antibiotics for 2 weeks. The right palpebral fissure completely fused within 1 month of the incident, and the left eyelids only started to fuse in the last month before presentation. According to the owners, before the accident the cockatiel had normal-appearing eyelids.
The levator is one of the tiniest, most delicate muscles in the human body. Its sole function is to raise the upper eyelid - without it, we would all have the drooping eyes of a bloodhound.Vigorous rubbing of the eyelid, although not a primary cause of drooping eyelid, can aggravate the condition. In persons with myopia (nearsightedness) or who have had cataract surgery, vigorous rubbing can also cause detachment of the retina through the pressure exerted on the eyeball. If you must rub your eye, avoid rubbing the eyelid itself. Instead, rub the eyebrow or the skin over the cheekbone just under the eye. This will provide just about as much relief of itching or other irritation of the eye. Rubbing the eyes is admittedly a difficult habit to break, but the potential reward is well worth the effort.
THE number of people having antiageing plastic surgery increased dramatically in 2005. Figures to be published tomorrow by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) show that 2279 patients had face or neck lifts in 2005, up 42.1-per cent on 2004. There was a 50.2-per cent increase in the number having eyelid surgery - some 3415 patients - and a 34.8-per cent increase in the number of people having brow lifts, a total of 580 patients. Eyelid surgery is the second most popular procedure after breast augmentation.

They argue that, if marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and other drugs were legalized, several positive things would probably occur: (1) drug prices would fall; (2) users would obtain their drugs at low, government-regulated prices, and they would no longer be forced to resort to crime in order to support their habits, (3) levels of drug-related crime, and particularly violent crime, would significantly decline, resulting in less crowded courts, jails, and prisons (this would allow law-enforcement personnel to focus their energies on the “real criminals” in society); and the drug production, distribution, and sale would no longer be controlled by organized crime, and thus such criminal syndicates as the Colombian cocaine “cartels,” the Jamaican “posses,” and the various “mafias” around the country and the world would be decapitalized, and the violence associated with drug distribution rivalries would be eliminated. By contrast, the anti-legalization camp argues that violent crime would not necessarily decline in a legalized drug market. In fact, there are three reasons why it might actually increase. First, removing the criminal sanctions against the possession and distribution of illegal drugs would make them more available and attractive and, hence, would create large numbers of new users. Second, an increase in use would lead to a greater number of dysfunctional addicts who could not support themselves, their habits, or their lifestyles through legitimate means. Hence crime would be their only alternative. Third, more users would mean more of the violence associated with the ingestion of drugs. These divergent points of view tend to persist because the relationships between drugs and crime are quite complex and because the possible outcomes of a legalized drug market are based primarily on speculation. However, it is possible, from a careful review of the existing empirical literature on drugs and violence, to make some educated inferences.

Despite an industry upheaval and two gravely ill sons, this health-care entrepreneur discovered the prescription for perseverance. Sadly, looming business woes were the least of the Langdons worries that year. In the summer of 1996, at age three, their son Spencer–twin brother of Tyler–was diagnosed with leukemia, warranting three years of chemotherapy and approximately $1,000 worth of medication each month. Faced with circumstances that would obliterate the future goals of most, the Langdons didnt fold, but instead expanded ATPs services to override the Medicare massacre. Making ATP a onestop shop by adding outpatient rehab to its services was the ultimate goal, but first the Langdons had to move the company out of their Carrboro, North Carolina, home (situated in a bedroom, no less) and into a Hillsborough, North Carolina, office complex. To Ted, outpatient was ATPs salvation. I really started seeing the effects [of the Balanced Budget Act] in 1997, says Ted, 33. Medicare-based agencies were laying off staff, and the first people to go were with contract companies. If they didnt go Out of business or merge with other corporations, agencies drastically reduced their pay rates to contract companies, lowering the therapists wages. Some just didnt pay at all–like House Calls, a statewide home-health agency in North Carolina whose owner was nabbed for allegedly double-billing his way to Medicare/Medicaid fraud in 1997. I tried everything I could to retrieve [the $14,000 House Calls owed], but they were sued by everyone, says Ted. They had everything frozen, and I wa s so far down on the lawsuit list that, basically, I never got paid.
The things some people will do for a white Christmas.

SYRACUSE - The clash of the new global economy with oldfashioned borders has one Syracuse law firm adding immigration law to its business practice. Immigration attorney Ramon E. Rivera is the newest partner in the labor-law practice group of Mackenzie Hughes LLP. Rivera formerly worked at the firm of Micale and Rivera in Syracuse.”Returning to the country may not be as easy for some employees and executives,” he says.Concerns over immigration laws have caused an increase in the number of business clients seeking advice before traveling, says Rivera. Several have called him to seek counsel to en sure smooth journeys in the atmosphere of heightened border security. Clients from Middle Eastern nations, such as Jordan and Saudi Arabia, have been subjected to extra scrutiny following Sept. 11, he says.
News Editors and Government/Legal Writers The State Bar Court Review Department has affirmed a recommendation that San Francisco immigration attorney Miguel Gadda (#64832) be disbarred from the practice of law for multiple acts of misconduct, including five instances in which his clients were ordered deported.

FOR THE uninitiated, medical and health insurance is a relatively new class of insurance in Malaysia compared to motor, fire or personal accident insurance. A lot has been written about it, but there continues to be confusion over what health insurance really is.
“There are [more than] 30 million Americans who have no health insurance and another 20 million who have inadequate health insurance,” says Rep. Louis Stokes (D0Ohio), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust. “It is mandatory that we begin to try and give Americans–particularly minorities–adequate health care as a right.” The Bush plan would give people not covered by Medicaid tax credits, and families making less than $80,000 a year tax deductions to pay for medical costs. He would also pass laws to ensure that even chronically ill patients could receive health insurance. The plan has received a cool reception on Capitol Hill, and alternate proposals, including a full-scale, government-paid national health insurance plan, are under development. But what does America really want for its health care system? The views are many.

A trip in a stretched limousine has rew- arded Fartown High School pupils. Six students were given the special trip for having a 100% attendance record in the school year and for improving behaviour. The students were driven from school to Scammonden Water, where they enjoyed games and a picnic. The initiative was org- anised by teacher Joanne Carter and project worker Sarah Clarke.
Daimler-Benz yesterday decided not to let its German rivals leave it in the dust in super-luxury cars, approving plans to go ahead with production of a limousine to compete with Rolls-Royce. As Volkswagen and BMW reached a settlement on taking over Rolls brands, Daimlers management board gave the go-ahead for production of the Maybach, which it has previewed at auto shows for the past year. “With the positive decision for the production of the Mercedes- Benz Maybach, we are underscoring once more our claim to represent the absolute top in every market segment,” said Daimler chief executive Mr Jurgen Schrempp.

The Heaths up so high! In the latest in a series of articles Huddersfield University sports historian Dr Peter Davies explores the heritage of one of the towns most famous golf clubs. HUDDERSFIELDS brightest golfing prospect, Chris Hanson, boasts a first-class sporting pedigree. The 21-year-old learned his trade at Myerscough College, Preston, where he studied sports studies and golf and leisure management.
Golfs governing bodies are to introduce a one-stroke penalty rule in an attempt to combat slow play. The words “slow play” are to appear in the rulebook for the first time from 1 January. Among the other changes coming into effect next year are ones that permit committees to make local rules to prohibit play from an environmentally sensitive area. A further amendment will deny a player relief when his stance, not the ball, is affected by casual water, ground under repair or certain damage to the course.

Ratinoff as a director of fund investment management. Ratinoff will specialize in real estate acquisitions for the western United States. Ratinoff has held senior positions focusing on real estate investments with McDonald Investments, Chase Securities and BT Alex. The San Diego chapter of the Institute of Real Estate Management has elected the following individuals as members of its 2005 Executive Council: Nancy Eagle, Harman Asset Management; Pele Wylde, Burnham Real Estate Services; Eddie Goldberg, Sea Property Management; Renee Savage, Capital Growth Properties; Harry Gersten, Union Bank; Carolyn Perriga, Transwestern Commercial; Jim Tostado, Hibiscus Investments; Wade Walker, Griswold RE Management; Sharon Eastman, Realty Executives; and Elizabeth Bzchmann, ConAm Management. The 2005 council members will be installed Nov. 11.
Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. That, however, is not a reason to not seek certification. The committee recognizes that few lawyers are likely to possess specific and detailed expertise in each of the many subjects that fall within the scope of real estate.

Run by The Concrete Centre in collaboration with The Building Centre Trust and delivered by leading designers, innovators and manufacturers, the Concrete Elegance lecture series provides graduate architects and engineers with an inspirational insight into a range of projects where off-site and cast in-place concrete have been used to achieve innovative and elegant design. The 2007 Concrete Elegance series continued to cover a range of issues and projects. The first lecture examined developments in sustainable concrete architecture. In particular, it focused on the reduction of both embodied and operational CO2, how to create carbon-neutral concrete and the design of single-skin self-finished external concrete walls. Lecture speakers included: Toby Lewis of Fielden Clegg Bradley Architects, who discussed the National Trust Heelis building in Swindon and the Persistence Works in Sheffield; Patrick Filipaj of Zurich-based Banz Choffat Filipaj Architekten, who examined the single-skin concrete construction of Peter Gartmanns Char House; and Ian Prichett of Lime Technology, who presented the use of hempcrete for Adnams Distribution Centre designed by architect Aukett Fitzroy Robinson.
ConcreteConcrete is a hardened building material created by combining a chemically inert mineral aggregate (usually sand, gravel, or crushed stone), a binder (natural or synthetic cement), chemical additives, and water. Although people commonly use the word cement as a synonym for concrete, the terms in fact denote different substances: cement, which encompasses a wide variety of fine-ground powders that harden when mixed with water, represents only one of several components in modern concrete. As concrete dries, it acquires a stone-like consistency that renders it ideal for constructing roads, bridges, water supply and sewage systems, factories, airports, railroads, waterways, mass transit systems, and other structures that comprise a substantial portion of the U.S. wealth. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), building such facilities is in itself one of the nations largest industries and represents about 10 percent of the gross national product. Over $4 billion worth of hydraulic cement, a variety which hardens under water, is produced annually in the United States for use in $20 billion worth of concrete construction. The value of all cement-based structures in the United States is in the trillions of dollarsroughly commensurate with the anticipated cost of repairing those structures over the next twenty years. The words cement and concrete are both of Latin origin, reflecting the likelihood that the ancient Romans were the first to use the substances. Many examples of Roman concrete construction remain in the countries that encircle the Mediterranean, where Roman builders had access to numerous natural cement deposits. Natural cement consists mainly of lime, derived from limestone and often combined with volcanic ash. It formed the basis of most civil engineering until the eighteenth century, when the first synthetic cements were developed. The earliest manmade cement, called hydraulic lime, was developed in 1756, when an English engineer named John Smeaton needed a strong material to rebuild the Eddystone lighthouse off the coast of Devon. Although the Romans had used hydraulic cement, the formula was lost from the collapse of their empire in the fifth century A.D. until Smeaton reinvented it. During the early nineteenth century several other Englishmen contributed to the refinement of synthetic cement, most notably Joseph Aspdin and Isaac Charles Johnson. In 1824 Aspdin took out a patent on a synthetic blend of limestone and clay which he called Portland cement because it resembled limestone quarried on the English Isle of Portland. However, Aspdins product was not as strong as that produced in 1850 by Johnson, whose formula served as the basis of the Portland cement that is still widely used today. Concrete made with Portland cement is considered superior to that made with natural cement because it is stronger, more durable, and of more consistent quality. According to the American Society of Testing of Materials (ASTM), Portland cement is made by mixing calcareous (consisting mostly of calcium carbonate) material such as limestone with silica-, alumina-, and iron oxide-containing materials. These substances are then burned until they fuse together, and the resulting admixture, or clinker, is ground to form Portland cement.

And it would enable a viewer at a companys head office to see what is happening at one of their distant depots. Oliver Vellacott, the man behind the company, used to work for Vision Group, the Scottish camera on a chip pioneer, which has failed to turn its world-beating technology into a commercial success. It is a failure that Vellacott is determined not to repeat. The advantage that Indigo believes it holds over competitors is the use of its own Risc processor and a patented operating system. This enables it to put all the functions on one card that can be fitted to each camera. With bulk orders, this can bring the cost per card down to around $100. Direct competition comes from Telexis Corp, from Canada and Cambridge, UK-based Telemedia Systems Ltd, though this company specializes more in multimedia applications. However, the bulk of competitors offer systems that require a PC to be attached to each camera, an arrangement that is considerably more expensive than that offered by Indigo. In the secretive world of security, most of Indigos contracts are covered by non-disclosure agreements, so Indigo does not produce the usual list of major customers. But Vellacott says turnover has tripled during each of the past three years and an IPO will be considered in a years time. A partner makes a box that connects a security network to the companys WAN, thus opening the way for new level of monitoring applications. Even for the humble basic security functions, digital technology offers big advantages. The poor quality of images on analog systems is often worsened by the deterioration in video tapes but Indigos system can be stored on disk. At the rate of 1MB a minutes, 24 hours of surveillance will produce storage needs of around 1.5GB, which currently costs around $100. Within a year, security camera makers are likely start switching their new products over to digital technology and the market will take off in a big way. With just 25 employees - 18 engaged in RD - Indigo may have found the ideal market to build a secure future from the digital revolution.
Jim Allison, Principal Planner, CCJPA commented: We set up very high thresholds in terms of bandwidth and applications to be tested on the system and are pleased to see that the results exceeded those thresholds. We wanted a simulated safety and security test with video to and from the train, and test additional operational and passenger applications. With the successful test using Nomad Digitals system we are confident that there is a system out there that meets our operational and customer needs. The success of the demonstration, conducted by Nomad Digital, proves that aside from enabling rail operators to upgrade their safety and security systems, the technology also allows them to achieve improved operational efficiency through real-time ticket transactions, train diagnostic data, food sales and inventory and other miscellaneous communications. In addition, train operators will be able to increase passenger ridership and improve passengers experience on board trains by offering wireless DSL, enabling them to utilise seamless broadband connection for all Internet applications. Nigel Wallbridge, Chairman and Joint-Founder, Nomad Digital, comments: We have just made a killer application a reality! This POC demonstration shows the extensive capabilities that our cutting edge technology can bring to the railway community worldwide.

organic foods uk

Its no secret that more and more grocery shoppers are choosing to go organic. As a matter of fact, more than a third of all households are buying organic foods today. Thats why Cascadian Farm, a leading manufacturer of delicious and wholesome organic products, is introducing its new line of 16-ounce family size frozen organic vegetables, available in everyones favorites: sweet corn, garden peas, broccoli cuts, cut green beans and mixed vegetables. For information call Susan Schneider at 847-438-4466.
With demand growing, large companies were bound to take an interest in the organic food market. Sales have steadily increased over the last few years, from $3.5 billion in 1996 to more than $9 billion in 2001, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Ellen Holton, spokeswoman for a company that certifies organic food, Quality Assurance International, said that if food giants like Frito-Lay hadnt begun marketing organic foods, the mainstream supermarkets might never have started selling the products. Frito-Lay, the PepsiCo-owned snack food company, sells new organic blue and yellow corn chips under the Tostitos brand name, as well as an organic salsa. Coca-Cola purchased a beverage line, Odwalla, in 2001, and is selling organic carrot, apple and orange juices.

Anita Diamant A Wyatt Book for St. Martins Press, 321 pages, $23.95 hardcover The world of The Red Tent is the world of the biblical patriarchs, but not as the Bible has shown it to us. Rather it is what we have not read and heard: this world as seen and lived by the sole daughter and several wives of Jacob. In the red tent of the title, the women gather to menstruate and to give birth but also to rest and to talk, passing on wisdom and spinning collective memory. They love and delight in their sons, but it is daughters who carry the family stories. Dinah, my last-born, Leah says when she finally names her My daughter My memory. Dinah (whose name, Diamant tells us on the first page, is pronounced Dee-nah) is the books narrator, but the story begins before her birth, with the meeting between Jacob and Rebecca at Labans well and soon after, the encounter of Jacob and Leah, the woman who would give birth to Dinah, youngest and only daughter among her many children.
